Olympus Announces the 17mm f/1.8 M.ZUIKO Lens for Micro Four Thirds Mount
For Micro Four Thirds shooters, Olympus today
announced the release of its latest prime lens, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f/1.8,
which will ship in December and is available for pre-order here. With a 35mm
equivalent focal length of 34mm on Micro Four Thirds digital cameras such as
the new Olympus E-PL5 and E-PM2, the lens is amazingly compact at just 1.4
inches long. This fast wide angle lens
will be perfect for all-around street shooting and portraits, landscapes and
low-light photography.
The 17mm f/1.8’s classic all-metal body style looks
beautiful, and the lens is packed with nine lens elements in six groups—including
three aspherical lens elements to correct aberrations and to deliver very sharp
images. The lens utilizes Olympus’ Movie
and Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system for quick focusing for still
photography and smooth, silent movement for video. The lens also features the same snap-focus
manual focus mechanism found in the company’s 12mm f/2.0 lens, which allows for
manual pan focusing with a distance indicator found on the lens barrel.

With a minimum focusing distance of just 9.8 inches (25cm),
the lens truly opens up numerous creative possibilities. The wide maximum aperture of f/1.8 is also
very fast, making this a great lens for capturing low light photos or for
controlling a wide range of depth of field.
The lens will ship in December for $499.99.
